Cupping is the latest fad around the block, with celebs too making a bee line for it. Claimed to be a stressbuster, Cupping is a fairly simple technique, with no use of medicine whatsoever. This centuries old form of alternative medicine, in which suction is created in specific parts on the body using cups has given relief to many of the jetsetting junta in town. While actress Gwyneth Paltrow is hailed to have popularised cupping a few years ago, most recently it was Jennifer Aniston who was seen sporting cupping marks on her back during an event. This technique has its fare share of fans and many of the city’s young women are taking to it as it is said that cupping helps to increase fertility in women. Of the many, is BPO employee, Elena Vas (name has been changed) She explains her experience with cupping, “I was suffering from depression and added to that, I also had a lot of work pressure. Since I have always been keen on using alternative medicine, cupping was something that I thought might be useful. While, I didn’t see the any change in the first sitting, gradually I did feel the positive changes. I am a more optimistic person now. Even talking to you right now, I feel that I am much happier after my treatment. So what is this strange remedy using cups all about? “Cupping removes impurities from the blood. It detoxifies the body,” says Dr Ayesha of Healing Hands Hijama Clinic. “Less impurities means that the body is healthier and can fight better against diseases,” she adds. Syed Tameen, an assistant manager first underwent cupping therapy in Saudi Arabia. He was so impressed with the results, that when he returned to India, he made his whole family take the therapy. “I had a migraine problem. Though I felt no immediate relief initially, gradually my problems went away,” he claims. Bushra, a city housewife had signed up for two sessions, “I have taken only two sittings of the therapy for my joint pains and I can already feel the difference. The pain is receding,” she chirps happily. Many people who’ve tried this method believe it to help in overall well-being. Dr Abid Inamdar of Hippocrates Health Point says that cupping is slowly taking a wholesome overall look at health. “It cures physical, spiritual and mental ailments,” he feels. Cupping is also said to work on numerous ailments like diabetes, arthritis blood disorders and even obesity. “It can also cure cancer in the early stages,” claims Dr Ayesha, adding, “Since cupping works on several pressure points in the body, it works as pain and stress reliever. Many patients with psychiatric needs often undergo this therapy too.” Cupping usually leaves marks on the body, which disappears after some time. Dr Junaid Khan, a consultant at Renew Medical Centre feels, “Cupping can remove around 70 ailments between the neck and shoulder blades.” While this ancient technique is slowly gaining favour, there are sceptics like Meenal Puri who ask, “Any new alternative therapy becomes a fad, but I don’t see how it can be better than going to a proper doctor, so I would be wary of trying it.”
