Forgive me. I must vent my frustrations. Most would agree that a shelters main focus should be to move the cats and dogs out. I disagree. There are many wonderful ideas and events that can help to adopt many of these wonder companions to great homes. If these events are not executed properly, if piss poor planning is involved, if the homework is not completed, then it doesnt matter how many were adopted out. Theres always going to be a few that end up in the wrong hands for the wrong reasons. A shelters first and foremost obligation is the complete and total welfare of the animals. Not only in the shelter but after they leave. If a dog or cat is adopted during one of these massive events and is sent out the door with a voucher and a promise it will be spayed or neutered, no background check, no questions asked, just a $10 bill. Is that a responsible act on the shelters behalf? I say no. While 80 to 90% of these dogs and cats will go to wonderful loving homes, what happens to the other 10 to 20%. They find themselves living a life chained to a tree, flee infested, become feral searching for their own food, breed for money, or worse. Homework has to be done. Planning is a requirement not an option. Is adopting out 90 dogs and cats to good homes worth the risk of 10 living a life of misery? I SAY NO. A SHELTERS #1 OBLIGATION. COMPLETE AND TOTAL WELFARE FOR THE ANIMALS.
