Forgive me for posting an item a bit past Barnards era, but the Sir Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart discussed in this post also wrote a very enjoyable and engaging book on whisky. Scotch: The Whisky of Scotland in Fact and Story was released in 1951 and meanders between recollections of whisky history, growing up around Balmenach and finishing with short biographies of the whisky moguls of the era. Theres no mention of Alfred Barnard in the book, but Balmenach was on his itinerary on or about August 8, 1886, just about a year before Sir Roberts birth. I believe the book is still in print to this day and is well worth finding an edition no matter how distant or recent. By the way, Barnard had arrived in Beautiful Edinburgh and visited the Distillery of the same name on this day in 1886. He had checked in at the Balmoral Hotel the day before. Other than his time in Campbeltown, this was part of the longest stretch of visiting Distilleries that would not survive to be open in our day. The last currently open Distillery he had visited was Glenguin (now Glengoyne Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky) and it would be until September 13 and his visit to Bladnoch Distillery - The Spirit of the Lowlands that he would visit a now-open or somewhat active Distillery. Dont worry, well check in again, here, before then. Cheers!
