Forgiveness Facts Matthew 6:5-15 Read When you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. When you pray, dont babble on and on as people of other religions do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again. Dont be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him! Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And dont let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one. If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. (Matthew 6:6-15) Reflect This prayer is often called the Lords Prayer because Jesus gave it to the disciples. While providing a pattern for prayer, Jesus gives a startling warning about forgiveness: If we refuse to forgive others, God will also refuse to forgive us. Why? Because when we dont forgive others, we are denying our common ground as sinners in need of Gods forgiveness. Gods forgiveness of sin is not the direct result of our forgiving others, but it is based on our realization of what forgiveness means (see Ephesians 4:32). It is easy to ask God for forgiveness, but difficult to grant it to others. Whenever we ask God to forgive us for sin, we should ask ourselves, Have I forgiven the people who have wronged me? Respond God doesnt lead us into temptations, but sometimes he allows us to be tested by them. As disciples, we can pray to be delivered from these trying times and for deliverance from Satan (the evil one—Matthew 6:13) and his deceit. All Christians struggle with temptation. Sometimes it is so subtle that we dont even realize what is happening to us. God has promised that he wont allow us to be tempted beyond what we can bear (1 Corinthians 10:13). Ask God to help you recognize temptation and to give you strength to overcome it and choose his way instead.
