Forgiveness is Gods response to heartfelt repentance, its His choice, and He foots the bill through what Christ did on the cross. It is finished. Refusal to accept forgiveness could mean a number of things: the repentance wasnt sincere, or it could be the belief that I need to beat myself up which would be the equivalent of saying to God I dont believe what Jesus did is enough, I dont believe it IS finished, and I think it WILL be finished only after I grovel and thus add my works to the work of the Cross. In other words a person is too proud, and unable to receive. Or it could be deep down they KNOW their repentance is insincere so they can only offer works. It could even be as simple as a lack of faith in the cross or ignorance of the Word. Whatever the reason, it is a terrible thing. God wants to forgive, as do His adopted sons and daughters. Its grace and it simply cant be earned. It has to be received in faith. Faith says Yes, God, amen, as astounding as it is to me, I believe what You say and You know better. Pride says I know better.
