Forgot to cross-post this from earlier: E-ALERT: Suspicious Activity Hi all. Im still getting reports of suspicious activity. If you see something suspicious. Please call the Sheriff as soon as you can. If it is a crime in progress, call 911. If it is “suspicious activity” call the non-emergency line: (760) 510-5200. Currently, there are a ton of deputies in our community (undercover and uniformed) who can respond pretty quickly. So don’t waste time emailing me or calling anyone else. Suspicious activity sounds so vague and you might not want to call the sheriff thinking you don’t want to bother them, but believe me, they don’t have a problem with you calling even if you think it is stupid. That’s what the non-emergency dispatch line is for. Here’s what you could do to help when you call in: a) if practical and safe, try to get the license plate number. that’s the single most important information you can get. b) try to write down a thorough description of how they look (clothing, hair, beard, ethnicity, height, body type, etc.). c) get the make and model of vehicle d) get a picture (if safe and practical) e) make sure to have an actual street address when you call. It’s the first thing they ask for when you call. SO: a) If there is a crime in progress, call 911 immediately. (you see someone committing a crime) b) if there is no crime in progress, just suspicious activity, call the County Sheriff Non-Emergency Line as soon as possible. c) then you can call whoever else you want: friends, neighbors, etc. d) if you feel up to it, share it with the TC to centralize the information. NOTE OF WARNING Keep in mind that looters are not your common garden variety criminal. They are people willing to take advantage of the misery of others and willing to take great risks to do so. As old-time residents here in our valley keep reminding me, every fire has looters and there have been residents in past fires who have had guns pulled on them or beaten by looters they approached. It’s no joke. So don’t put yourself in a precarious situation. Pay attention to details, take a picture if safe. Call the Sheriff. Stay safe out there people. -JP
