Forgot to post this yesterday, but nevertheless... #Date 7/5/13 As the narrator finishes reading chapter 28 of “The Bear,” I feel an overwhelming sadness. “No,” I whisper, shutting off the Digital Talking Book Player. It is the outcome I knew, deep down, was coming. Perhaps I knew at the beginning of the book, but certainly at that chapter. I reflect upon 3 years ago, when I wrote my first experimental draft called “Spirit Warrior”. I had just finished listening to my first R.A. Salvatore book entitled “The Ghost King”. I thought then that it was not what I normally read, for the ending was terribly sadl. And so I started “The Bear” fully aware that it would not end well. Perhaps I should have waited to listen to that one, though, for I really felt unwell that first day or so. As a result, my concentration was sporadic. And there are just some books that if you miss any details at all, you can’t follow the story. And if you can’t follow the story, what is the point of reading? I’m fairly confident I will keep this book long enough to read through it again. I may have had my doubts earlier in the week, but now my focus is far from sporadic and I am thoroughly engrossed. Yes, it is a sad tale, but I knew that before I started. Some writers, more so than others, have a certain style or tone to their writing which is common to all their novels. The parallels, though there be differences, cannot be ignored. And perhaps it is through reading such things that I also gain a glimpse into my own writings. Again, the parallels are impossible to ignore. These stories are complex, varied, intense. It is a mark of the variety I enjoy reading. It sharpens my mind. It enables me to explore my thoughts and feelings on varied subjects. Some are happy, and others are sad. All have a piece of their author in there, somewhere. Sometimes it is easy to tell the writer’s personal views on something, at other times it is difficult, if not impossible, to determine.
