Forgotten Ponnamaravathy Maravar Kings ==================================== Ponnamaravathy is a Town in Pudukkottai district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.This small town also holds the status of a taluk.Ponnamaravathy, is named after King Ponnar Thevar and his brother King Amarar (Ammar) Kandan Thevar, Who belong to the Maravar Kingdom of Sevalur. In the 16th Century, Ponnamaravathy was a separate kingdom and it was named after the kings Ponnan Thevar and King Amaran Thevar. The town was built by these kings. The ancient Nachiamman temple of the town is mentioned in Silapathikaram, an old Tamil literature showing the prominence of the town since olden days. Moreover the literature revels that the town had link between Cholan and Pandayan dynasties. The town has witnessed large number of wars between the Cholas and Pandyas. In the 12th Century there was a war between Pandyas and Singalars in this region. The town has large number of historical landmarks revealing the ancient traits of the town. In addiotion it has a large man made tank named after the King Amarkandan Thevar, it’s called as “Amarkandan Oorani”.The Siva temple in the town was built by Raja Raja Cholan II. There is an important place in the town called as “Natukal”, the place where the king Ponnamaran died and even today the stone is the symbol of pride and respect patronizing Tamil warriors and their bravery.They were killed by the British. Where Ponnar was killed, they have placed statue at the centre of road in front of Natukal. Whereas where King Amarar was killed in front of a police station, and there have been a Temple erected at the side of the road.Even today, every year, people of Ponnamaravathy regardless of caste and religion celebrate a festival for them for one week from starting on the first Friday in May. This is one of the biggest festivals in Ponnamaravathy..
