Former Germany international Thomas Hitzlsperger has retired aged 31 citing chronic injuries. The central midfielder made more than 50 appearances for his country and was dubbed ‘Der Hammer’ in reference to his fierce left-footed strikes from distance. Hitzlsperger made his name in the Premier League with Aston Villa before switching to VfB Stuttgart who he helped win the Bundesliga in his second season.
