Former Governor of the old Gongola State, Bamanga Tukur Party chairman inaugurates acting NWC members. Despite persistent criticisms over the state of affairs in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, its National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, on Monday came to its defence, saying it does not condone illegality but is committed to rule of law at all times. Mr. Tukur stated this while inaugurating the newly appointed members of theNational Working Committee, NWC, of the party in Abuja. Among those inaugurated at the party’s national secretariat in acting capacity are Chibudom Nwuche as Deputy National Chairman; Remi Akintoye, National Secretary; Tony Okeke, National Publicity Secretary; Simon Jok, NationalLegal Adviser; Oyibo Nwaneri, National Women Leader; and Mohammed Danladi, National Treasurer. They replaced the NWC members who resigned their appointments at the National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting of the party last Thursday, following a report by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, faulting the mode of their election at the March 2012 National Convention. They are to act until July 20 when the substantive NWC members will be elected. Mr. Tukur explained that INEC noticed some defects in their election, adding that as a party that respects the rule of law and abides by the principle of democracy, it had to take urgent steps to regularize the membership of the NWC. He said the PDP believes in equity and justice and does not engage in imposition of candidates or officers or condone illegality hence it asked the NWC members to resign. “Our party belongs to all of us here – everybody. So, l will like to thank you for being present here to witness another stage of PDP way of running its affairs according to the conscience of the collective mandate,” he said. The national chairman boasted that PDP is working and waxing stronger, adding that in terms of administration, it remains one family. Hepraised the former NWC members for working hard for the party and expressed hope that they will continue to support it to follow the path of trust and justice. “We appreciate them and we hope that they would continue supporting our party to follow thepath of trust and justice so that we will move our country and really fulfill the mandate of the people who gave us the mandate too.” Mr. Tukur also rejoiced over the defection of some members of the opposition parties in Nasarawa State to PDP last Saturday, saying it is an indication that people have confidence in the party and its leadership. He said that the umbrella (party’s symbol) is large enough to accommodate all Nigerians and asked its members to spread the message to others. Responding on behalf of the new NWC members, Mr. Nwuche assured that they will work closely with Mr. Tukur to ensure that PDP retains its position as the largest party in Africa. Via premium times
