Former LAPD Police Chief, Daryl Gates: “Sometimes officials can be too quick to assess blame, for political reasons, without realizing the damage that can be done to the rank and file,” he said. “When I was chief I coined the phrase the ‘L.A.P.D. Family.’ When my officers had problems, I had problems. Once you publicly humiliate an officer, demote or reassign them, you’ve lost them totally, so you better think twice before you take that step. There are ways you can acknowledge the public’s concerns but not rush to judgment before you have all the facts.”
