Former Police Deputy IG Bophani Arrested Malawi’s graft busting body, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), says it has arrested former Deputy Inspector of Police Nelson Bophani in connection to the systematic looting and theft of government funds christened ‘Cashgate’. In a statement the ACB released Thursday, the bureau’s spokesperson, Egrita Ndala, said Bophani has been arrested for attempting to obstruct the course of justice and misuse of public office. Mr. Bophani has been arrested in relation to the on-going investigation into cashgate. He is charged with Misuse of Public Office and Conspiracy to Defeat Justice,” Ndala said. Authorities say Bophani who at one time presided over cashgate investigations is alleged to have concealed information pertaining to a non-existent trust called Good Deeds Trust belonging to former finance budget director. He is also accused of attempting to sweep under the rug vital information in a money laundering case involving former ruling People’s Party politician Stafford Mpoola whom the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested in October 2013
