Former Political Prisoners Society (FPPS) Call for Immediate Realization of President’s Speech Content …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………...... Yangon, June 6 The Former Political Prisoners Society (FPPS) has urged President U Thein Sein to urgently realize the content of his radio address on June 4th. In the speech, the President broadcasted that he did not want political prisoners and that they would be released as soon as possible. The President also mentioned that a certain amount of time would have to be spent investigating the case of political prisoners and that the government had no desire to extract political gains from this act. Furthermore, the prisoners who had been released would not be charged with the section 401 of Myanmar’s penal code For the liberation of all political prisoners, the Political Prisoner Investigation Committee is now reexamining the past convictions of the captives. However, there are some cases that the government does not accept, apprises U Tin Maung Oo, a former political prisoner from FPPS. He says, “For example, out of the list that we have proposed, former major Win Naing Kyaw, a prisoner charged with a nuclear case, is not recognized as a political prisoner by the government.” The FPPS warmly welcomed the President’s declaration that the section 401(A) of Myanmar’s penal code would not be employed as a political weapon. In addition, the organization mentioned that the government should immediately release the announcement that all remaining charges on the political prisoners already freed from the section 401(A) of the penal code would be lifted. During President Thein Sein’s reformist government regime, about 400 political prisoners have been freed in the discharge of over 1500 prisoners, claim politicians.
