Former President Zardari liberated judiciary, says Kaira - #PPP #Pakistan Karachi Honourable judges of the higher courts would still be languishing in prison had Asif Ali Zardari not released them in line with the democratic vision of Benazir Bhutto. Qamruz Zaman Kaira, a senior leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), said this on Friday while speaking at a seminar titled “President Asif Ali Zardari’s Five Years in Power and It’s Impact on the Democratic Legacy of the Country”. Kaira said the PPP has an ironic history. “The party has a tradition of sacrificing the most for the country, yet it is always blamed for being unpatriotic.” The former minister said since its inception the PPP had made enemies, as sections of the establishment and bureaucracy could not digest the results of the 1977 general elections and made it a point to eliminate Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. “They chose the judiciary to murder our leader. We never asked for justice because that will entail punishment. We always demanded that the narrative of history should be corrected.” The PPP leader further said that whenever the party won the mandate of the people and came to power, its paths were strewn with trouble. “When Shaheed Mohtarma returned after winning the elections in 80s, she was greeted with the Kalashnikov culture and the same was the case with Zardari.” He said that when the PPP came to power in 2008, the country was on the brink of break-up. “Pakistani flags were not allowed to be raised in Baluchistan and Swat, and the international media was claiming that the capital Islamabad will soon be taken over by the Taliban.” Kaira claimed that while the former president was dealing with the crises with his political acumen, the largest province of the county – Punjab – was being a thorn at every step. “When President Zardari was trying to tackle the major issues, the chief of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz sided with the conspirators by going to the court with a petition in the Memogate scandal in order to disrupt the democratic set up,” he alleged. Adding to Kaira’s remarks, Awami National Party (ANP) leader Afrasiab Khattak said that when Zardari became the president, the then chief minister of Punjab refused to greet him as the elected president of the people. However, when Nawaz Sharif recently came to Sindh as the prime minister, the provincial government greeted him with due respect. The ANP leader said that his party fought a long war with the Taliban, which was imposed on them by General Ziaul Haq in exchange of dollars. Reza Rabbani, the PPP additional general secretary, said his party would oppose the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), claiming that the federal government did not bother to bring the issue in the Council of Common Interest and acted unilaterally against the constitution. “We will thoroughly oppose the anti-worker policies of the government at every forum and make sure that PIA’s privatisation does not take place,” he added. Lashing out at the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), PPP Karachi president Qadir Patel said the political dynamics of Karachi were peculiar and anybody trying to voice their political opinion was simply eliminated by a certain political party. “We are threatened more by the beardless terrorists then those with beards,” he said without taking any names.
