Former Secretary-General of Commonwealth, Emeka Anyaoku, on Tuesday, said that desperation for political power on the part of so-called leaders is responsible for the crises in Nigeria. He also accused Christian and Muslim groups of being the major contributory factor to Boko Haram terrorism in the country. He made this known while speaking at the National Retreat on Human Security in Abuja, organised by National Orientation Agency (NOA), with the theme “Mainstreaming Human Security.” According to Anyaoku, most of internal crises in Nigeria are caused by desperation and contestation for political power. “The contestation becomes more disruptive of human security in pluralistic countries when there is inequitable control of political power between the component major ethnic groups, or unbalanced distribution of socio-economic resources or religious extremism, particularly involving the desire by one group to impose its brand of religion on the other groups. “Such conflicts naturally generate antagonistic memories that are sometimes hard to heal, even long after the cessation of conflict,” he said. Anyaoku added that, “We must build tolerance and harmony among parties previously in conflict as a key to post-conflict reconciliation; we must continue to affirm the need for all religions to treat one another with mutual respect. He called on all Nigerian leaders, including opposition party leaders, to join hands in denouncing and fighting the Boko Haram group that is currently ravaging the country.
