Former Supreme Court judge and renowned legal luminary V R Krishna Iyer passed away in Kochi on Thursday afternoon. Iyer had celebrated his 100th birthday on November 15 this year. Iyer was admitted to a hospital in Kochi, where he is residing, on November 24. The hospital sources confirmed his death at 3.45 pm due to multiple organ failure. Iyer had been a minister in the first communist government under E M S Namboodiripad in Kerala in 1957. After the government was dissolved in 1959, Iyer turned to legal profession and starting practice as an advocate in the Kerala High Court. In 1968, he became a judge of the High Court. In 1973, Iyer was elevated as a Supreme Court judge. He retired as SC judge in 1980 He was conferred the Padma Vibushan in 1999.For the past several decades Justice Iyer has been spearheading several mass movements in Kerala as the head of the Kerala Janakeeya Prathirodha Samithi. He has also published over 100 books.
