Former pro football player named Salmon River High School principal By MICAELA BEDELL WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2013 ARTICLE OPTIONS AA FORT COVINGTON - The Salmon River Central School Board of Education appointed Brian LeBaron of Corning as the new high school principal after a two and a half hour executive session during which they interviewed three finalists for the post. “We’re very excited to have this gentleman on board,” board President Christopher Nye said during the public portion of the meeting. “I think he’s going to be an assett to our school.” Mr. LeBaron will bring nine years experience as principal at Broadway Middle School in Elmira to Salmon River High School. He left that post at the end of the last school year. According to Mr. Nye, he has a track record of creating healthy new learning environments in a failing school and pushing to advance curriculums. “We’re hoping he can work his magic at Salmon River Central Schools,” Mr. Nye said. He noted that Mr. LeBaron exudes an impressive mix of athletic and scholarly background, referring to him as a sort of “Renaissance man.”Mr. LeBaron briefly played for the Pittsburgh Steelers after a successful high school and college football career at Syracuse University. He also holds two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree in Administration. “If I was a high school student, that would be cool,” said Mr. Nye. “Students are looking for heroes.” The appointment of a new high school principal follows the resignation on Aug. 3 of former Principal Alison Benedict, who failed to receive tenure from the board after a state-mandated probationary period which could not legally exceed three years. Ms. Benedict’s tenure was granted in a special meeting on July 12, but only in combination with her resignation as principal and appointment as an English teacher for a two-year probationary period. This decision was reached through mutual agreement during negotiations between both parties. Mr. LeBaron’s official start date is Sept. 3. His appointment by the board was unanimous. The 2013-2014 school year for Salmon River Central Schools starts Sept. 5.
