Moroccan champions, Raja Athletic Club, were one of the biggest winners during the first leg matches of the preliminary round of the Orange CAF Champions League, whereas Nigeria’s Enyimba, AS Vita Club of DR Congo, Asante Kotoko of Ghana and Egyptian giants Zamalek had to sweat for the much desired results. Raja thumped Diamond Stars of Sierra Leone 6-0 on Friday in Casablanca with Mouhssine Iajour scoring four times, two in each half with Abdelilah Hafidi and Abdelkabir El Ouadi the other scorers Enyimba survived an early scare from Togolese debutants, Anges de Notse, coming back strongly in the final eight minutes to snatch victory in Aba. Vincent Orode fired the visitors into the lead on 41 minutes before Sibi Gwar drew level on 82 minutes. Kingsley Sokari shot the ‘Peoples Elephant’ into the lead for the first time three minutes later before Gwar sealed victory in stoppage time. It was however a different story for Nigerian champions, Kano Pillars, who were downed 3-1 by AS Vita Club in Kinshasa. Firmin Mubele, Guy Lusadisu and Lema Mabidi scored for the Congolese whilst Rabiu Ali netted the consolation for the visitors. Ghana champions, Asante Kotoko found it tough against a resolute Barrack Young Controllers team from Liberian before a brace from Kwabena Adusei from the spot saw them through 2-1. Isaac Pupo scored for the Monrovia-based club in between. At the Cairo International Stadium, Mohamed Ibrahim and Momen Zakaria scored in each half to power Zamalek to a 2-0 win over AS Douanes of Niger, handing new coach Ahmed Hossam ‘Mido’ victory in his maiden game at the continental level. “We played well tonight and we could have won by a bigger margin but we were not lucky in front of goal. Im confident that we will win in the second leg, and with a big margin,” Mido said after the game. Swazi champions, Mbabane Swallows and Kampala City Council (KCC) of Uganda were architects of the biggest upsets of the weekend with victory over Nkana FC of Zambia and El Merreikh of Sudan respectively, both 2-0. Swallows stunned their guests thanks to strikes from Kudzanayi Matanda and Felix Badenhorst, whilst a goal each in the first half from Herman Wasswa and Tony Odur was enough for KCC to silence Merreikh at their backyard. Another shocking result was Sporting de Praia Cruz of Sao Tome and Principe’s 3-2 win over Stade Malien of Mali in Sao Tome, just as Flambeau de l’EST of Burundi silenced Diables Noirs of Congo 1-0 away in Brazzaville. Pascal Hakizimana scored in stoppage time. In Johannesburg, a brace from Kingston Nkatha and the other from Mandla Masango was enough for Kaizer Chiefs to beat Black Africa of Namibia 3-0. Senegalese debutants, Diambars overpowered ASFA Yennenga of Burkina Faso with Seydina Keita scoring the only goal on 74 minutes. It was double delight for Angolan duo, Kabuscorp and Primeiro de Agosto, beating Cote d’Or of Seychelles (5-1) and Lioli of Lesotho (2-0) in Luanda. Lami, Breco, Love Cabungula, Tresor Mputu and Lunguinha were on target for Kabuscorp whilst Gerald Basset pulled one back for the Seychellois. Amaro and Mateus Galiano were the scorers for Primeiro de Agosto. In Harare, Zimbabwe champions, Dynamos outclassed Mochudi Centre Chiefs of Botswana 3-0 thanks to a brace from Washington Pakamisa and the other from Masimba Mambare. Goals from Dawit Fekadu, Shimekit Gugsa and Michael George handed Ethiopian champions, Dedebit a 3-0 win over KMKM of Zanzibar in Addis Ababa. Elsewhere in Douala, Les Astres thumped Akonangui of Equatorial Guinea 3-0 to secure a huge advantage ahead of the return leg next weekend. Earlier on Friday, Zimbabwe-import Edward Sadomba netted a brace and a goal each from Abdelrahman Fetori and Moataz Al Mehdi ensured a 4-0 win for Ahli Benghazi of Libya against Foullah Edificer of Chad in Tunis.
