Fort Huachuca is holding a special event on Tuesday, January 20 at 11:30 to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. The public is invited to attend this event, held at the Thunder Mountain Activity Center. Guest speaker for the event is Sgt. Maj. Aurora Patterson, NETCOM G-1 sergeant major. Dr. King was a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement, which brought significant changes to the American way of life. Our Army is a leader in equality and regard of others and continues to lead the Nation in promoting Dr. Kings vision. In 1948 President Harry Truman ended segregation in the military with Executive Order 9981. Seventeen years later President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 which prohibited racial discrimination in voting. Tragically, Dr. King was assassinated just three years later, demonstrating that racism and bigotry cannot be wiped away with the stroke of a pen. Today the military continues to lead social change through policy updates like ending Dont Ask Dont Tell and lifting the exclusion on women in combat roles. But, even today, changes in policy are not sufficient to result in cultural change. The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a way to transform Dr. Kings life and teachings into community service that helps empower and strengthen local communities.
