Fortunately, it never really dawned on me that this show could/would go to Broadway. Worrying about things like that would have distracted from the importance of the work—recounting a horrific chapter in our racial history and resurrecting an archaic patently racist art form. In a quiet moment at the Guthrie, en route to Broadway, this lady asked What are you hoping will come from this, Forrest? I replied, I hope the doors to Americas regional theaters will be opened to me now. In her usual way―gentle, genuine and giving―sitting in the nations flagship regional theater, she said, Thats done. Today, it is very clear that its not about opening doors but opening roads … along which there will be MANY doors. Thank you, Sharon Washington.
