Fortune was like this horse. She would do the foster kid birthday parties for Catholic Social Services, all braided up in pink and purple for the girls, and brown and denim for boys. I would haul her into town, and she would be in a garage or backyard or driveway and children would pet her, hug her legs and literally hang on her tail. She never lost her calm patience, and knew the kids needed her. I discovered her special love of kids on our very ford trail ride. A kid on the beach of the Colorado River came running up to the group, and she was interested in the child in a special way. I hopped off, and gave the child a pony ride and she was an angel. This was a fairly remarkable feat for a two year old filly who had a reputation for being an alpha mare to the extreme, but she taught me a lot. I miss her every day.
