Forty five years after the bridge scaffold accident I was in the infusion room with my girlfriend Kate. I had been taking the chemo for about three hours. Virtually instantly my breathing stopped. It was like being 80 feet below the water SCUBA diving and having the regulator stop the air. Kate saw that I was in trouble and called the nurses. They immediately stopped the chemo and started pumping me full of Benadryl. It took about ten minutes for my breathing to get back to normal. That time I did get pretty scared. I asked God if this was the end and tried to hang on for as long as I could. I have been pretty close about eight times or more. God always comes through, but when it gets real close I start to doubt. That’s probably just human.
