Forty-seven states, DC and the Virgin Islands have laws that specifically allow moms to breastfeed in any public or private location. Two of the remaining states -- South Dakota and Virginia -- exempt breastfeeding moms from public indecency or nudity laws, and Idaho is the only state that has yet to pass any similar laws. So essentially in three states, a mother who is feeding her child can be told to leave any public or private location if it bothers somebody. While this would lead some to conclude that nursing is less common in those states, in both Virginia and Idaho statistics show that >90% of infants have been breastfed and South Dakota still rated higher than many other states, notably Southern states. An underlying factor in the success rate of breastfeeding is poverty, more specifically, a lack of. Rates for breastfeeding up to twelve months are higher in households that are above the poverty level. (Which is ironic, because its cheaper than formula....)
