Forty some years ago, I was in an altercation between a motorcycle - TopicsExpress

Forty some years ago, I was in an altercation between a motorcycle and a lorry (in Germany). I was the perfect victim as passenger on the motorcycle. The result for me was a severe ankle injury. Now, these many years later, I find that the process of moving, even with just two carloads of stuff, causes enough discomfort to have to use crutches that night and then a cane for a couple days. Today, I ended up causing myself yet more discomfort and so am enthroned on my bed, computer in my lap, and guzzling pain meds. Well, not really guzzling but doing what is required to get the pain down to a manageable discomfort. (otherwise, there would be no sleeping). It used to really frustrate me, this limitation and quasi dependence on pain meds, but I eventually came to recognize that life is for living and not sitting around in pain. So I take the pills in order to sleep well and live fully. I refuse to become a couch potato just because of some pain. Working in the medical field for most of my life, I learned some years ago that studies have shown a direct correlation between healing and pain. The more pain, the longer it takes and the harder it is to heal. The less pain, the faster the healing and the happier the patient. For myself, I chose less pain, and a happier and livelier life. Yet I have to remind myself of this decision each time I start feeling frustrated about hurting and needing a pill so I can accomplish things (like sleep, walking about, shopping, vacuuming, fixing dinner, etc). You know, all those things we do as part of living. Rather than thinking of the medication as a crutch, I recognize it as part of my vitamin regimen - if I want to live healthier and happier, I take my vitamins AND my pain medication when needed! Well, thats enough of a rant for one evening, dont you think? I do! And I wish you a restful sleep and a lively tomorrow! With or without pain meds!
