Forty years ago this month, one of the 1970s’ best-known comic book ad campaigns began and it wasn’t restricted to one publisher. Contracting with DC, Marvel, Gold Key and Harvey, Hostess arranged to have each publisher prepare a one-page ad featuring their respective characters—whether Superman or Captain America or Bugs Bunny or Casper—taking part in a mini-adventure that hinged on the goodness of Twinkies, Cupcakes, or Fruit Pies. By the time the series ended in the fall of 1981, over 300 different pages had been produced and Hostess ads—however silly—had made an indelible impression in the minds of fans. Charlton Comics was conspicuous in its absence from the ads but we’ve posted an example of what one might have looked like…courtesy of John Byrne.
