Forward BY Dr. Bonsu (DDPH/ER) Probable YF cases Western, Upper West, Eastern and Ashanti regions, 18Jun 2013 Dear Directors, Kindly informing you that the National Public Health and Reference Labortory (NPHRL) during the week, confirmed positive four (4) cases of Yellow fever (Probable Yellow fevere cases) from Wa East, Lower-Manya-Krobo, Atwima Mponua and Wassa Amenfi West in 4 regions namely Upper West, Eastern, Ashanti and Western regions respectively. This makes the cases probable YF cases. Specimens from the cases are being sent to Institute Pasteur, Dakarfor further laboratory tests and feedback will be given as soon as ready. NB! Past experience indicate that, most of the probable YF cases detected in recent past at NPHRL end up being confirmed positive at Institute Pasteur. The likelihood of the cases being confirmed positive is therefore high. We therefore wish to suggest and request regions to initiate requisite investigations into the cases and start preparations for appropriate response actions. At minimum, the following should be started in the respective regions and districts as we wait for the final confirmation from Institute Pasteur: • Conduct case investigations and compile detailed epidemiologic data on the cases; • Follow up of contacts of cases and other household members; • Conduct health facility records review; • Compile records and reports on routine YF vaccination performance and past YF vaccination campaigns in the respective districts for the past 10 years; • Take steps to strengthen surveillance on jaundice with fever. Brief summary of the cases are as per attached. Thank you. Dr. Badu Sarkodie.
