Foul smelling odour result of decomposing weed Shoalhaven City - TopicsExpress

Foul smelling odour result of decomposing weed Shoalhaven City Council has received a number of calls from concerned residents following reports of a foul smelling odour in a number of coastal areas throughout the City. Residents in parts of the Bay and Basin area as well as Ulladulla have reported the presence of ‘rotten egg gas’ across the area with some community members concerned that the odour may be sewage related. After Council officers today investigated these reports the odour appears to have been created as a result of decomposing sea weed combined with the recent unseasonal warm weather and still conditions. Council Director of Planning and Development, Tim Fletcher said he anticipated the smell would rapidly subside with the arrival of a cold front expected to hit the area tonight. “While unfortunate, it appears as if the offensive odour which is prevalent in some parts of the community is part of a natural microbial cycle sped up by the recent weather conditions,” said Mr Fletcher. “Council staff have investigated the area’s sewage networks and there is no evidence of a leak or any matter that would be responsible for this smell. “Unfortunately the area currently has a lot of decomposing sea weed which has been left as a result of the recent flood waters and rains experienced throughout parts of the City.” “This decomposing sea weed has combined with the recent warm weather to dramatically speed up microbial activity in the organic matter which in turn produces hydrogen sulphide, which is better known as rotten egg gas.” “While this smell can obviously be extremely offensive I would certainly anticipate a much improved situation once the expected cold front hits the area tonight.”
