Found the stone memorial in front of CST. Heart goes out to the two of the unique freedom fighters of DESH. One-hundred-fifty-seven years since the national uprising, two forgotten heroes who laid down their lives for the country will finally be given due recognition. Mangal Gadiya and Sayyed Hussain were brutally killed after being tied to mouths of live cannons in front of thousands of people at what is now known as Azad Maidan. Sayyed Hussain and Mangal Gadiya, soldiers in British Army who had revolted against the British Rule, were the first Mumbaikars killed by a cannon on October 15, 1857, at Azad Maidan. The governor who ordered the killing was Lord John Elphinstone. The war of 1857 is a unique example of Hindu-Muslim unity. Unfortunately, it was the last effort where Hindu and Muslims joined hands against the British.
