Found this extrapolation from an article I wrote in 1997 on Revival and Awakening. We definitely need an Awakening in 2014: A true awakening is when God moves, when He touches an individual first in personal revival and calls that person to holiness and purity and consecration. It’s an increased desire for more of God. This is the place where you walk in the perfect law of liberty found in the book of James. You choose to pursue God’s higher calling even when you can get away with living a “good” life. You become so aware of the goodness of God that you say, “I don’t need all that, I have the liberty to serve God and to serve Him in holiness.” In each of the past great awakenings God raised up prophets who cried out in the wilderness beyond established institutions. George Whitfield in the fields of New England, Francis Asbury on the frontiers of the south and the west, Charles Finney in the developing cities and D. L. Moody among the un-churched. Only Whitfield with his Oxford degree was a learned man. Asbury, Finney and Moody lacked formal education, but they all recognized the need for both piety and learning. They knew they needed to study to show themselves approved. In order to “rightly dividing the Word of Truth,” they had to read the Word, pray, seek God’s face and hear from God. God is not looking necessarily for people who have degrees in higher education. Rather He is looking for those who know Him. There’s a big difference between knowing about Him and knowing Him. He wants people who know Him that He may be known through them. In his book The Coming Great Awakening, McKenna writes that in each great awakening God raised up prophets who cried out in the wilderness beyond established institutions. Today God is doing the same thing. God may be stirring your heart to raise you above the status quo. He is calling out a prophetic generation, to be voices crying out in the wilderness saying “prepare the way for the coming of the Lord is at hand.” Doug Stringer
