GREG HUNT:- I am delighted to have been able to approve $4.5 million for 57 projects that will deliver up to 1.6 million native trees towards the 20 million trees target nrm.gov.au Hi Greg - now wheres the other$1200 million youll need to plant a total of 450 million trees to abate the amount of CO2 really involved? Assuming each conscripted slave can plant 100 trees a day that will be 4.5 million days of labour or a workforce of about 5,000 people to get them all planted withing 4 years, plus supervision, time for leave, sickness, accommodation, insurance, workers compensation. The UN estimates that if we havent made substantial abatement progress withing the next 5 years, itll be too late to prevent dangerous climate change. Bear in mind that the trees will be young for a long time, survival rate wont be 100%, etc etc. Lets also assume that if the trees are natives [eucalypts etc] each one will probably need an area of about 25m2 - so youll need to allocate approx 1,000,000 hectares of land for this program to go anywhere near succeeding plus appropriate soil and water to establish them [and youll need to protect them against predators and fire] - BIG JOB?
