Founded in 1956, the Asia Society is the leading educational organization dedicated to promoting mutual understanding and strengthening partnerships among peoples, leaders and institutions of Asia and the United States in a global context. This year, the Asia Society is excited to announce an art exhibition in New York titled “Buddhist Art of Myanmar” featuring 70 spectacular works—including stone, bronze and wood sculptures, textiles, paintings, and lacquer ritual implements—from the fifth through the early twentieth century. In honor of the exhibition and U.S.-Myanmar cultural exchanges, Ambassador Mitchell and his wife Min hosted a reception at their residence. Guests included His Excellency U Aye Myint Kyu, Union Minister of Culture, and his wife Daw Khin Sway Myint, Tom Nagorski, the Executive Vice President of the Asia Society, and members of the Shwe Man Thabin dance troupe, who will your New York and New Haven this coming April. At the reception, Ambassador Mitchell highlighted the exhibition as a sign of friendship and mutual respect between the people of the United States and Myanmar. “This is not an easy thing, to leave these unique treasures in foreign hands. These treasures mean so much to the people of this country, and you are trusting us with them for a period of time because you want us to learn about them and because you want to create better understanding between our peoples.
