Founding of the Ten Point Program: This is what happened with the beginning and completion of the Ten Point Program and getting a name for our new organization in the month of October 1966. Actually we started on the 10th of Oct, NOT the 15th. On that night in my office where I worked for the City Government of Oakland, we created the first draft. Three years later, in my book, “Seize The Time” (STT), I stated it was October 15th. I was making reference to the middle of October 1966. 1969-1970 I was in jail under a lot of pressure having been attacked and viciously beaten and thrown in the hole, but a week later I started recording STT. With the help of Art Goldberg who visited me in jail, 80% of STT was completed. Big Man was the one who had everything transcribed and then sent back to me via Art Goldberg, then back to Ramparts Magazine. More important, twelve years ago I went to research court records to get the exact date Huey and I went to my office at night after work to write the first draft of the Ten Point Program. The day Huey and I received probation and NOT sentenced to jail, that was the 10th of Oct., when the first draft was written. Even Melvin Newton a few days later was instrumental in helping Huey and I finalize some of the writing of the Ten Point Program. But with the completed final draft, we did NOT have a name for our organization. It was on the morning of October 22nd, 1966 that we named the organization THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY for Self Defense. Then at my office I etched out the title name of our organization on an oil stencil. And AT MY OFFICE LATER THAT EVENING Little Bobby Hutton and I RAN OFF a thousand copies of the TEN POINT PROGRAM. Later Huey came down to my office and helped staple the thousand copies. When I got home my sister and brother, John Seale, threw me a Surprise Birthday party. It was October 22nd, the finalized founding date of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense. Power To All The People!
