Four large white wyandottes lost to secondary effects of heat here - TopicsExpress

Four large white wyandottes lost to secondary effects of heat here yesterday. Big pain! Our best breeding male plus four of the heaviest hens. The lighter ones and the pullets are ok. We are putting automatic sprinklers on timers in today and looking at whether we should move them to a shadier location. They had shadecloth all down the side of their pen but it wasnt enough. We lost five chicks on the day of the heat also and hoped that would be all. I dont know what the temperature got to because I wasnt home at the time but reports are that it was 39.5 and humid. Unusually hot and humid for October. We normally only have mid thirties at this time of year so the fowls are not used to it. I hope it doesnt stay this hot or the chicks wont grow as well as they should.
