Fourteen years. Goodness, where did time (and my hair) go? Today - TopicsExpress

Fourteen years. Goodness, where did time (and my hair) go? Today is your birthday. You are very aware of this because you stayed up until midnight just to say “it’s my birthday!’ and then woke up during the wee hours of the morning to reiterate that it’s your birthday. One thing I love about you being here with me during the summer is that I get to see the joy becoming another year older brings you. One thing that pains me is knowing that you’ll have to leave once summer ends. I am only older than you by two decades and honestly I wish that I had more wisdom to impart. Come to think of it I don’t believe that many of the lessons you have learned to this point in life have come from me. Other than ‘Chew with your mouth closed because if you chew with it open you lose the flavor of the food (which I totally made up so that you wouldn’t grow up chewing with your mouth open). Another lesson from yours truly might’ve been to say ‘yes’ often instead of ‘yeah ‘unless you are singing that Usher song, changing the words to that song would ruin the whole thing. Here’s another that I’ve continued to preach. Clean your ears, often. By doing so you can always listen intently to what others are saying. At least this way when your teacher asks “Illy did you hear the question?” You can respond with “Yes, I did. You asked ‘why do llamas chew with their mouths open and my answer is I don’t know but if they knew any better they’d close them so they can taste their food.” Happy 14th Illeana Marie Martinez. In all seriousness, should my bus come tomorrow hopefully this list will be helpful, in no particular order. I love you Illeana more than a rose loves water and sunlight. 1) Make the moments that YOU want to happen in life happen. 2) Lead with your heart but be wise enough to not let anyone push you over. 3) Above anything be selfless, respectful, and humble. 4) The right partner will exalt you and never humiliate you. 5) Never heckle comedians. 6) Courage is a muscle. The more you demonstrate it the stronger it gets. 7) When you don’t have courage you can often find it in others. 8) Never say I can’t. Instead ask to Be Motivated. 9) Make time for family. 10) Be authentically YOU.
