Fourteen years ago a stray orange kitty came to our house to stay. She had been living on the streets and was terrified of everything. She slept in our basement, in a cardboard box, for a whole year before she ventured upstairs. Any sudden moves or loud talking sent her streaking to the basement where she hid behind the furnace. Gradually she poked her head around corners and decided we were probably not going to eat her. Little by little she snuck into our bedroom and found our bed quite comfortable, then to the back of the couch where she could watch the wold go by. We could pet her briefly and then were rewarded by a heathy swat and hiss. Her next perch was the dining room table and then the kitchen bar where we ate. Buzz fed her tid bits of his dinner and I would soon do the same. We were having a family dinner and she thought she was the invited guest. She never sat in a lap nor snugggled up in a chair. But she was close to our feet, meowing a conversation. Somrtime after the fifth year she started to purr in contentment. ( Be careful, touching her tail resulted in a few quick jabs!) At ten p.m. she went to bed, our bed. Sometime later when we arrived for our nightly slumber, reluctantly she moved, to allow our feet under the covers. As years past she kind of liked curling up to our backs or tummies. Entering her space , without invitation still resulted in a smack or bite. Two more years passed and Buzz was bestowed the honor of picking her up and holding her as she purred. In bed at night she ventured under the covers by me to get toasty, and then drank from my water glass on the bedside table! She was big and beautiful with clean shining hair. Two months ago she started losing weight. Dr. Andrea said she was getting old and gave her meds to help her gain weight. We were hopeful. She quit eating and drinking four days ago. Now settling in a lap for warmth and stroking. Yesterday she passed away. Good bye our lovely Zoey. Until we meet again.
