Frailty! Thy name is woman.--William Shakespeare By yousaf I had come across this popular line of 16th century English literature when, for the first time in life, I started reading Shakespeare a decade, or so ago. Since then, I have had a wavering belief in this particular anti feminist expression Frailty! Thy name is woman. because I couldnt discover its universal applicability in real life around my limited surroundings as I would always think that womenfolk in the western parts of the world were different from their eastern cousins. In fact, part of my reservation and disbelief was due to the overwhelming increase in feministic literature around the world on womans rights and equal standing in society; part of the disagreement with the above lines was my looking at the gap between the prevalent conservatism of 16th century England, and the freedom of thoughts and expression-the two democratic virtues of the 20th century in addition to womens outstanding contribution in almost all walks of life in the 21st century. Also, my own exposure to the world of women from various cultural, social, economic and geographical settings, remained very limited until, one day, I stepped out of the closed corridors of my own culture, and mixed with women from other socio-cultural backgrounds. Only then, I realized that Shakespeare was right, and his popular lines were not only about the women of his time, but universally applicable on women across cultures, colors, climates, castes and creeds. In other words, a woman may be from any part of the world, she is the same breed in her prime psyche as is any other woman from anywhere, and her second name is tenderness, frailty and delicacy as nicely put by that grand master of literature all times, I mean Shakespeare.
