Francis Samuel Matthews was born to the late Roy and Catherine Matthews on March 2, 1964 in Wilmington, Delaware. He departed this life suddenly on February 26, 2014. He was raised in a section of Newark, Delaware near the railroad tracks known as The Village. Sam attended the Newark area public schools and graduated from Newark High School in 1982. He was very intelligent and excelled academically with honors. He also attended Hampton University and Virginia Tech College. Sam was employed with the State of Delaware for 20 years, working as a Youth Rehabilitation Counselor in Middletown, Delaware and Wilmington, Delaware. Sam was united in marriage to his wife Lanora Dorsey-Matthews on April 17, 1998. Sam was a devoted father to Sheena and Jerry Evans and godfather to Ronnaysia Davis. Sam has two brothers, Wayne(Sharon)and Richard (Gail) Matthews and two sisters, Roylene Anderson(Julian) and Christina Monroe (Ray. His mother-in-law and father-in-law are Evelyn Brown and Eugene Dorsey. His sisters-in-law are Regina Taylor and Latanya Dorsey. His grandmother-in-law is Octavia Manlove. Sams devoted cousins/friends were Ray Jefferson, Kenny Hall, Greg May and Mike Wilson. Sam was preceded in death by his grandmother Lillian J. Walker, who raised him and two brothers, Franklin and Roy Matthews. Sam has so many cousins, nephews, nieces who he loved and who loved him, that they are too numerous to count. Sam loved to read books, spending time with family and his many friends. He could recite the names and birthdays of each and every of his nieces and nephews. He was a very spiritual person. He loved God and was well versed in the scriptures. He loved living but was not afraid to die. He knew what came after death (Peace and Eternity). Love was always in his heart. Sam will be remembered as a great husband, brother, dad, uncle, cousin and friend. Funeral 11am, Friday, March 7, 2014 at Faith City Family Church, 179 Stanton-Christiana Road, Newark, DE; viewing 10 am to 11 am. Burial at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
