Frank Ellsworth resigned today. On behalf of Board Chair Rick Hesel: I regret to inform you that Frank Ellsworth has indicated that he intends to step down as Interim President of the University on April 15. Having endured incredible stress, an impossible schedule, and all manner of other pressures, Frank’s health has suffered and his physician has advised that he resign. You should know that Frank agreed to become interim president against the advice of his family and in spite of the warnings we made about the difficulty of the situation he was facing. For that we should be profoundly grateful. Frank insisted on transparency, made himself open and available to all members of the university community, and worked with tireless energy to lead the university to a solution that would protect the best interests of students and ensure that the university’s transpersonal mission would endure. As testimony to his strong leadership, Liz Li and her investor group have been pressing Frank to stay on. But he has made it very clear that his decision to resign is final. To be blunt, I don’t think the Sofia/ITP would have survived without Frank’s leadership. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and BOT – we all owe Frank an enormous debt of gratitude for the wisdom, patience, and good judgment that led us to a solution that protects the interest of students and preserves the transpersonal mission of the university.
