Frank Gaylord modeled the figure in the very back of the “Column” of the Korean War Veteran’s Memorial after Native American hero John Erdman, WWII veteran of Co. C, 513 Infantry. Erdman was shot five times during the Battle of the Bulge in 1945 and lived, thanks to the valor of another comrade Gaylord used as a model for another memorial figure. There are Native American names listed on Maya Lin’s Vietnam wall. Michael Howard Bia (Panel 60W, Row 25) is one. He grew up on the Navajo Indian Reservation near Window Rock, Arizona. I found reference to other heroes at californiaindianeducation.org/native_american_veterans/. Near the Vietnam wall is Glenna Goodacres Vietnam Women’s Memorial (1993.) Goodacres other work includes numerous portraits of Native Americans. She designed the Sacagawea dollar coin, the first American coin to depict a woman and child or a three-quarters-view portrait. More next Wednesday on the Indian theme.
