Frank Spinelli posted this, and I wasnt going to comment on this on his post. As an Irish Catholic, we were raised to believe the Hierarchy and pope could do no wrong. As a Gay man, I was not attending a Catholic College, so I went to Brooklyn College, and I was warned not to attend because there were too many Jewish people, but I did not care because my father and mother had a lot of Jewish friends. My experiences in Brooklyn College was very positive. I learned a lot.I went to receive a graduate degree in Fordham because I thought how could I be Gay and Catholic. Fordham had a very positive effect on my spiritual development. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith was very condemning of Jesuits, which My life was very much framed by liberation theology. My family thought I was losing my faith when in actuality I was becoming more spiritual. I learned how the Vatican was silent and contributed to the holocaust, but at the same time I was not anymore influenced by the Vatican. I became what the Vatican hates and that is an independent thinker. Liberation theology was very much influenced by Vatican II. Its origins were in South America. It approaches the Bible and spirituality from various lenses or points of view. Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict both condemned liberation theology, but the Irish people were and are disgusted with what happened as far as the abuse of children. I have no doubt that Pope Benedict, the head of the congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith or what is known as the Inquisition stepped down when Ireland, Canada,Australia, Irish Americans proved he knew about everything and brought charges before The International Criminal Court as far as crimes against humanity. Now, we have to see what happens now!
