Frankenstein mythos: Lightning vs. Eel Im not a huge fan of the idea of electric eels being used to bring The Creature to life in I, Frankenstein. This was first used in the 1994 Frankenstein film starring Robert di Nero and its used here. Its going to perpetuate the idea that eels were used. Now, yes, the scene where Victor brings the creature to life in Mary Shelleys novel (Chapter 5) is deliberately vague as to how he does it. We know electricity is involved and alchemy and sorcery on some level (thanks to Paracelsus and Agrippa) but lightning always seemed the most likely. 1. He made him in an attic. 2. Victor had been fascinated by lighting striking a tree when he was seventeen and its power. 3. It was storming the November night The Creature was brought to life. All signs indicate that this is one detail the older films had right, that yes, he used lightning (just with other things as well).
