Franklin County Humane Society Temporarily Closed Ringworm Discovered in Feline Population St. Albans, VT --- The Franklin County Humane Society (FCHS) will be closed until November 21 due to several confirmed cases of ringworm in the feline population residing at the shelter. Executive Director Rusty Posner states, “We are closing voluntarily and in good faith so that we can effectively treat the infected animals and clean the shelter thoroughly.” She adds, “Although this is a difficult course of action for all involved, closing the shelter will allow the staff to focus energy on caring for our animals and preventing the infection from spreading. When we are free and clear of ringworm, we will have healthy, happy, beautiful animals available to our community!” Ringworm is non-life threatening fungal infection that affects the hair, skin or nails of cats and dogs, although it is most commonly found in cats. Typically, the infection requires a three-week course of medication and monitoring to ensure that the animals are responding to treatment. Ringworm can be transmitted to other animals and humans. To this end, all measures will be taken to treat the shelter staff and the infected animals promptly and efficiently. The shelter will be seeking donations of clean bedding, towels, cat toys and treats for their feline friends.
