Franklin County microburst comfirmed BERNARDSTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The National Weather Service has confirmed that it was a microburst that ripped a 5-mile path of damage through Franklin County. “All of a sudden it started raining out of nowhere and then I had to go run and grab everything, roll my windows up. I wasn’t even expecting it. It just came out of nowhere,” said Cody Smith of Bernardston. The microburst lasted for about ten minutes Saturday afternoon, producing winds of up to 80 miles-an-hour. The damage path is five miles long. “That wire right over there, from that telephone pole, it was a hot wire. It came down and started a small fire,” said Fred Johnson. Microbursts are possible whenever there’s a threat of a severe storm. There’s no way, exactly, to predict when or where they’ll occur. “My boyfriend, Lyle, is a lineman for Western Massachusetts Electric and he got a call around 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon and he was sent to Merrifield Road and 24 hours later he was still there,” said Jocelyn Morris of Greenfield. The national weather service determined a microburst caused the damage by interviewing witnesses, inspecting the damage, and reviewing weather radar.
