Freak accidents happen all the time. Sometimes its just how the cookie crumbles. What happened to Paul George is horrific. The problem is this: All too often, players in all sports want to perfect their craft but dont get stronger. What do you think Paul Georges squat or deadlift or Bulgarian squats (since he technically is a unilateral athlete) numbers are? I can bet horrendous. Its not a requirement that Im aware of. Sure, you can jump out the arena. Sure you can sprint like a madman. But what preventative measures are you taking to protect your body from breaking? Look at Kevin Durant. If you dont know what they call him, his nickname is Stickman. Why? Look how frail he is. He cant even bench 135lbs. NOW that isnt to say that its sport-specific as benching has NOTHING to do with the game of basketball but from an upper-body strength perspective, if you are that tall and incredibly talented and among the best in the game, and people are investing MILLIONS in to you, I would like to think you are somewhat built a little stronger than that. I watched Marshon Brookes (while he was playing for Bk before being traded to Boston) come in to my gym. I REALLY wanted to help him. Come to find out, he was doing his off-season training program with his AGENT. Not even a S&C coach. I watched a 225lbs loaded bar used for squats and honestly, his form made me quiver. I watched him do split squats and it made me shake my head. I did offer some advice...i dont know if he adhered to it. The point im trying to make is that in professional sports (outside of the NFL as those dudes are insanely brolic AND fast), there needs to be a bigger emphasis on strength training. Building too much muscle in sports like basketball and soccer is hard to do simply on the principle those are aerobic-endurance sports so they wont have the metabolic energy to put on massive amounts of muscle the way I would as a bodybuilder or lets say Adrian Pederson being that the sport of football is an anaerobic sport in nature. 1st was that Louisville dude in the NCAA tourney and now its PG. It seems to be similar breaks. Maybe the NBA and their S&C staff can reassess their strength training programs and see how to better equip their players bodies with more ability to produce and absorb force.
