Freaky Friday Did You Know? ~Lee~ Did you know that there are real places that inspired our favorite horror films? No lie! 1. Cheesman Park in Denver, Colorado inspired the movie Poltergeist. The park is said to be haunted because of unspeakable acts in the moving of bodies from St. Charles Town cemetery to new resting places in order to make way for the park. Bodies were put into child size caskets in order to maximize the number of caskets and thus profit! When the practice was found out the man running the show EP Durham (an undertaker) was removed from his post. There were still bodies in the cemetery so the city decided to take down the headstones and leave all the remaining bodies there. Events that occurred in Cheesman Park inspired the premise of the film Poltergeist and the subsequent sequels of the movie. 2. The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado both inspired and was the place where Stephen King penned his novel “The Shining” which was subsequently made into the famous 70’s horror flick by Stanley Kubrick. 3. The Exorcist was based on a Washington Post article that told of a 14-year-old Mount Rainier, Maryland boy who had been freed by a Catholic priest of possession by the devil through the ancient ritual of exorcism. 4. The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California was the inspiration for the Stephen King film Rose Red. 5. The serial killer Ed Gein was the inspiration for Stephen King’s book Psycho and the subsequent film starring Anthony Perkins as the somewhat demented Norman Bates.
