Fred Buckine was a friend of mine. He was a lot older than I was - TopicsExpress

Fred Buckine was a friend of mine. He was a lot older than I was and I teased him about this constantly. Fred teased me too, telling me a woman had no business being a lawyer. In fact it was an insult to the profession, he said, as it took jobs away from qualified male lawyers. I knew he was kidding since at the time his wife was a lawyer: currently a Florida Supreme Court justice. Fred served in Vietnam and while in service to our country obtained his College degree. He had a wicked sense of humor, rapier wit, and the respect of his peers. But what I remember most, was the day Fred and I, while in the old Hillsborough County Courthouse, stood next to an estranged husband who unexpectdly doused his wife in gasoline, and threw a lighted match on her. While she was engulfed in flames, Fred quickly took of his coat , wrapped it around her and put out the fire. He did it without hesitation or fear and he saved her life. Fred passed away this week. He was a great lawyer but even more importantly an outstanding human being. RIP
