Fred Mayer, PhD, returned to Pine Island this month ready to share new inventions, musical concepts, and unique instruments, in two upcoming concerts! A familiar face on the island, Mayer is a versatile and accomplished musician who often performs with BLT, The Troublestarters, Strange Arrangement, Left of Center, Kip Lawrence, Smokin’ Bill, ‘Drumming with Ndakhte Ndiaye’ and many other established musicians. ------------------------------------------------------------------- He now leads his own powerhouse, and all-acoustic, fusion quartet who will present two intimate Seasonal Harmonizing Concerts, Tuesday January 20th and Friday January 23rd. at 7 pm. The concerts will be held at the home of Ndakhte Ndiaye, 4625 Woodstock in St. James City. The format for Seasonal Harmonizing Concerts was established by Fabien Maman founder of the Tama Do Academy of Sound, Color and Movement with whom Mayer has studied. --------------------------------------------- ‘Fiddlin’ Fred will mesmerize the audience with his Viola d’amore, a replica of a seventeenth century string instrument which includes strings played with the bow as well as free resonating sympathetic strings. He designed and commissioned this Viola d’amore especially to be used in Seasonal Harmonizing Concerts. Saint James City resident, Ndakhte Ndiaye, Master drummer with the group, will play ancient West African drums including Djembe and DounDoumba which she also builds herself. Completing the quartet of Pine Island musicians are the over-the-top creative energies of The Brothers Van Kirk, Chip & Greg. A new instrument, the Monokotra, designed and built by Mayer, is Chip’s instrument of choice for these house concerts. The Monokotra consists of 18 drone strings, 11 koto strings, and four tamboura strings. Meanwhile Greg will contribute his noteworthy eclectic and versatile talent on acoustic bass guitar and/ or cello, and vocals. =================================== Only two performances are scheduled: Tuesday January 20th and Friday January 23rd, both at 7PM.
