Frederick Townsend Ward was born in Salem in 1831. He left Salem - TopicsExpress

Frederick Townsend Ward was born in Salem in 1831. He left Salem to ship out on a clipper ship, sold scrap metal in Mexico, served as an officer in the French Army in the Crimean War, and landed in Shanghai as a merchant. He got bored with the mercantile life and joined the Imperial Chinese Army, during the Taiping Rebellion. Eventually, he took the rank of general and commanded the Ever Victorious Army. He was wounded in battle in 1861 and died shortly after dictating his will. He was known to the Chinese as the Devil Soldier. I wonder if he was with the Salem Gang of Gallus Hill.
