Free Community Craft Day at HCC All supplies, tools and instruction provided, just bring the spirit of adventure!! Visit Haywood.edu for more information. ------------- Haywood Community College’s Foundation will offer a free Community Craft Workshop Day in the college’s new Creative Arts Building. Workshop space is limited and lunch must be reserved by Wednesday, July 17th. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Participants can choose from the eight workshops listed below: AppleMark In Make a Bracelet, students will create their own unique designs and get a basic introduction to working with metal. They will stamp, roll, file and form a copper bracelet. 9a-12p or 1p-4p Play in Clay is a fun, no pressure introduction to the clay studio and basic techniques. Participants will get their hands in the mud, learning to shape and form clay. 9a-12p or 1p-4p AppleMark In the Designer Pillow workshop, participants will design and piece together their own unique throw pillow. Students will learn about sewing, cutting with rotary cutters, and piecing patterns. 9a-12p or 1p-4p. AppleMark Learn to hand-cut basic dovetails in the Dovetails Demystified class. This classic joint marries strength and beauty. We will cover design, layout, cutting, fitting, and gluing full and half-blind dovetails. Router templates, bandsawing, and tablesawing are all machine methods that will be demonstrated and discussed in this workshop. Wood will be provided or participants can bring their favorite. 9a-12p. In the Artful Finishes for Wood workshop, participants will play with unusual surfaces and finishes such as torching, sandblasting, grinding, dyes, grain-filling, and photo-transfer. Wood will be provided or participants may bring wood scraps. 1p-4p. The Appalachian Heritage Arts Music workshop is an overview of Appalachian music and instruments. Students will gain a basic knowledge of the rich history and sounds of the mandolin, guitar, banjo, and fiddle. 9a-12p or 1p-4p. The Learn the Knit Stitch workshop is a great beginning class to learn to knit. Participants will learn the most basic stitch in knitting will enable them to make a scarf or simple bag. 9a-12p or 1p-4p. Handspun Fun will allow students to experience fiber spinning. This handspun yarn can be used for projects such as knitting, weaving, and more. 9a-12p or 1p-4p. Throughout the day, there will be a video called Video Stream: Spend a Moment with a Maker. This video was produced by The Center for Craft, Creativity, and Design in Hendersonville. This video features visits with craftspeople from across the region and beyond.
