Free Education And The Quality Of Education In Imo State: An Assessment Of The State Of Science Laboratories In Public Secondary Schools. Education is the bedrock of socio-economic development of every nation. The process of impacting knowledge and training individuals to become skilled professionals in various fields ought to be an important and integral function of government. I see education as an essential social / public service which should to a greater extent be funded by government at all levels. Therefore, it is not a big deal to here about free education especially at the foundation level. What is more important is the quality and content of the teaching and learning process, which forms the basis of my discussion with particular interest on science education in Imo state. The poor performances of secondary school students in the state particularly the science students, calls for attention and stringent measures to check this ugly trend. His Excellency Rt. Hon Emeka Ihedioha observed this pathetic situation and began to think on what to do to change the tide. Earlier this year, he set up a committee headed by Prof. Obioma Iheduru to study the causes of this downward trend and make recommendations as to the way forward. That committee discovered that there was no functional laboratories in most schools in the state. His Excellency took the bull by the horn and swung into action. On August 1st precisely he collaborated with the Scientific Equipment Development Institute (SEDI) Enugu to procure and distribute Scientific Equipment to Secondary Schools in Imo State. About 130 schools were targeted including private / missionary and government schools. Regretably, the governor of the state stopped the government schools from collecting their own equipment claiming that the school are very comfortable and doesnt need such materials. However, a visit to the various government secondary schools will send shocks down your spines. This is what i discovered....
